David Speakman was the original pioneer of the travel agents working from home concept. He founded Travel Counsellors, which was the first - and is also the largest - home-based travel company in the UK, in 1994. 2006 - Travel Counsellors has been named the UK's Best Travel Agent at the 20th annual Guardian, The Observer and Guardian Unlimited travel awards as voted by readers. He was recognised for being the pioneer of the travel agents working from home concept; recognising that experienced travel consultants could earn more, give better service and have a better work life balance by working from their own home, linked by the latest technology and specialising in giving their customers the highest possible levels of personal service. 2005 - Growing Business Awards/technology in business category Travel Counsellors was delighted to receive the ‘Technology in Business Award’ at the high profile 2005 Growing Business Awards produced by Real Business and the CBI in December 2005. Travel Counsellors beat tough competition from Hotelscene, Tribeka and VC-Net to win the award. 2003 - 2008 Queen's Award for Enterprise Travel Counsellors is officially recognised as the UK's first Travel Agency to receive the Queen's Award for Enterprise. The Award is given in recognition and reward of outstanding business excellence and performance, customer service and innovation. The Queen's Award is the UK's most prestigious business award.
